A recent study conducted by Intel suggests that by 2020 there will be 200 billion connected things. There are several implications of this. For one this surge in connectivity will create boosts in efficiency across industries and supply chains. Networked technologies will enable farmers to track the growth of crops truckers to transport with maximal efficiency and stores to stock goods to minimize waste. This technology will also continue to make life for consumers easier relieving them of some of the menial tasks of everyday life and making way for more meaningful activities. Conversely it will also create a growing potential for large scale breakdowns. At the most basic level each additional node in a network represents an additional point of vulnerability.
