Are You Leaving Your Property at Risk?

The last thing you want to do is attract the attention of an unwanted intruder. If you don’t take care of the qualities that attract a burglar, you are engaging in risky business. Do you have dark areas of your property where burglars can hide? Areas that aren’t well-lit are just asking for trouble.

You also ask for trouble when you openly display expensive objects in the window. Do you have an alarm system? If so, do you have a sign in your yard announcing as much? Quite honestly, even if you don’t have a home security system, it wouldn’t hurt to have a sign in your yard as a simple deterrent. No one said you couldn’t have one there and I am sure any home security company would love a little free advertising.

Also avoid tipping off someone that your house may be empty by leaving curtains open and lights on. There is nothing wrong with taking a late lunch to ensure you are home when someone may be sneaking about. Oh, and how can we forget one of the best deterrents of all, a barking dog!

How Can You Fight Back?

Want to prevent burglars from, well, burglaring your property? Consider implementing the following deterrents:

  • Video surveillance allows you to keep an eye on your home when you’re not there. Catch and deter criminals by installing surveillance cameras throughout your your place of residence. Place cameras around your building’s perimeter, particularly near entrances and windows. Also, consider areas inside where criminals would be most drawn to such as big windows, dark areas, or places of easy access.
  • Monitored alarms alert you if an intruder attempts to break into your home. An alarm is triggered and a signal is sent to the monitoring center. The monitoring center then notifies you and the proper authorities of the incident.
  • Mobile solutions that allow you to manage your security system from your computer or smartphone.
  • Window-break sensors trigger an alarm when the glass they’re monitoring is broken or the window is opened.
  • Door sensors sound an alarm when a door is opened.
  • Image sensors are activated by motion and capture images if someone is inside a monitored area.

In general, security cameras are a great visual deterrent, whether you are actually operating them or not.

Keep these tips in mind and never commit any unforced home security errors and you will ensure the burglars are kept out!
